The oldest wedding bouquets were filled with sweet smelling herbs, but the first flower to be associated with weddings was the calla lily. In the ancient world this was a large flower, and nearly always white. For some it was a symbol of purity, for others a symbol of lust. As time passed, roses took the place of lilies and in Victorian times a complex language of flowers evolved, where each stem of a brides bouquet meant something. Then in the 1920′s calla lilies because fashionable once again, but this time the fashion spread across the world; breeders worked on the flower and the mini calla was developed, along with a huge variety of colors.

Today calla lily wedding bouquets are by far the most popular; fresh or artifical, in pure white or brilliant orange or purple.

If you’re looking for unusual bouquets for yourself and your bridesmaids, and are worried that your florist wont make it happen, what can you do? Is it really possible to make a wedding bouquet yourself?

Brides say a resounding yes, and you don’t have to use silk flowers to do it. Although some brides attend one of the many florist courses, there’s no need to go so far. There are many books on wedding flowers which give step by step instruction on how to make your own.

So don’t be afraid to experiment. Buy inexpensive silk flowers and create a mockup of your bouquet, and remembers that there’s no reason to stick to flowers; feathers, ribbons, feathers, fruit, sea-shells, vintage brooches, bows, crushed tulle, twigs, dried pods, can all come together to create something unique and ideal for you.

Planning a wedding on a budget is a challenge, but one area where you can save quite a lot of money is wedding flowers. Even if you decide to have your bouquet made for you (and you can make your own, really!) you can save a great deal by making bridesmaids poseys, corsages, buttonholes and centerpieces. None of these are particularly difficult with a little planning, though the larger display arrangements can be a challenge.

One way to cope is to use silk flowers and to use large silk flowers so you don’t need too many. Let me explain. If you don’t have a knack with flowers this may not be the time to try Ikebana, but two things you can bear in mind

1. Foliage is always cheaper than flowers (and usually readily available from neighbors etc)

2. Fruit and vegetables are also usually cheaper than flowers, and can add color as well as texture to an arrangement.

Using flowers with large heads, such as silk hydrangeas, together with other large items like kale or artichokes, (wonderful texture) and wired vine tomatoes (fabulous color) and fruits like apple, lime, lemon and orange can make things a lot cheaper, and don’t forget grapes. These can be draped around he base of a centerpiece to make the whole display look opulent, no-one will ever know your choice was designed to save money. They’ll simply assume you’re a bride with style!

The use of a white decorative birdcage as a centerpiece is simple but elegant and ideal for anything to do with weddings. They are usually 13” or 21” high with a hinged top which allows you to get your hands inside. This time we can the make it both a Flower Arrangement and a Candle Centerpiece and before beginning put in a layer of cardboard in the bottom to keep everything in place.

All you need now is a pillar candle in a pretty color and you can buy faux branches of blossom that you can remove and stick them here and there on the outside with craft glue and do make sure to have some left over to glue around the bottom of the candle which you can decorate with little diamonds before adding the finishing touch of a beautiful butterfly.

If your venue doesn’t allow candles, as sadly some don’t, consider using battery operated remote control candles – while they sound unromantic, most are very convincing and produce a flickering, romantic glow.

These days many flower arranging tools are available to the general public, which means it is easier than ever to do your own flowers for a wedding or special event.

The secret, is to keep it simple. Practice before the event and stick to something you can do well. Candle centerpieces are often the easiest to do.

There are many variations, but the simplest involve floating candles. You can submerge a flower (orchids work well) in a tall thin vase, and float a candle in the top. It looks good alone, or you can add several at different heights, and put them on a mirror in the center of the table.

An alternative is to use a wide, shallow vase, such as a 12 inch cylinder, add bebbles or gems in the bottom and float flowers and candles on the water, or for a little more sophistication, fill the cylinder with water pearls, tuck a floralyte of the right color beneath them, add two floating candles and a single spray of flowers along one side of the cylinder.

It looks good and is very affordable, as well as easy to make. Ideal for brides on a budget.
